Our Herd and Farm

Our primary and favorite breed is the Red Devon. We also run Angus stockers brought in as weaned calves and have some Shorthorn and Murray Gray cows in the mix. All are raised on grass from start to finish and supplemented with local apples, alfalfa hay, and sprouted seed fodder we grow right on the farm (think tasty wheatgrass!). We especially love the Devon’s due to their temperment, suitability to a grass diet. Calves are born or brought onto our 100-acre, Frederick County regenerative farm and grazed and finished on our sustainable, chemical-free pastures. In the winter we supplement our rotational grazing strategies with local hay and sprouted seed fodder.

Price

A lot of bulk beef ranches get pretty complicated when explaining how they price their bulk beef.
WE MAKE IT SIMPLE - you pay for the finished weight of your portion of the beef and at the price of 13.50/lb for ¼ and ⅛ boxes, and 13.00/lb for ½ and whole beef orders. We do it that way because after two decades of raising, processing, and selling our grass-finished beef direct to customers at DC-area farmer’s markets, we’ve kinda got this pricing and packaging thing down.
So, we sweat the details like hanging weight, yield ratios, and processing fees - but only charge you a per/lb cost for what ends up in your freezer.
If you want to learn about the details of our pricing - please, please, please give us a call - we’ll connect you with Bob who loves to talk dates, weights, ratios, and yields! You can also click here to go to our FAQs on Bulk Beef

Ordering Your Bulk Beef

Bulk beef ordering is only open a few times each year. So, if it's not open today contact us and we’ll fill you in our next ordering window. It’s typically three months between when the ordering happens and when your order is boxed and ready for shipping. You secure your beef share with a 50% non-refundable deposit, which will be deducted from your final balance.

Payments/Delivery

After your initial 50% deposit is in, we’ll keep you informed about your animal’s schedule and contact you when we have an expected shipping date for your meats. Once we have the final weight of your box/share, you’ll be charged the balance due and we’ll contact you to arrange for the shipping date. If you’re local to the DC area, you have the option of picking up your meats at one of our weekly farmers markets around DC, otherwise, your boxes will be shipped frozen to your door.

FAQs

  • DO I HAVE TO PAY ALL AT ONCE?

No. There are options you can pursue if you want an interest free way to stagger your payments - such as Klarna, AfterPay, Affirm, and/or PayPal Credit. They’re not integrated into our site per se, but you can use any of them to set up your preferred payment schedule.

  • HOW MUCH MEAT WILL BE IN MY ORDER?

Let’s say you decide to purchase a quarter of beef from us, you would get about 140 pounds of beef. Of this, roughly 55 pounds would be ground beef, and the remaining 85 pounds would be steaks, roasts, brisket, etc.

In an average quarter (¼) beef you will get:
    - 1 arm roast
    - 5 chuck roasts
    - 7-8 rib steaks or Delmonico (same meat but without bone)
    - 4 T-bone steaks
    - 4 Porterhouse steaks
    - 4 Sirloin steaks
    - 5 Round steaks
    - 1 rump roast
    - 2 sirloin tip roasts
    - 55 lbs. hamburger

  • IS THERE A SAVINGS TO BE HAD WITH BULK BEEF FROM GCF?

The answer is YES, YES, YES! The majority of our steak and roast cuts sell for significantly more per pound at the market than we’re offering them as bulk purchases, and honestly, we’re frequently sold out of the family friendly savory cuts - so not only do you save money, but you get access to preferred cuts!

  • HOW MUCH FREEZER SPACE WILL I NEED?

Generally, one cubic foot of freezer space will hold 35-40 pounds of packaged meat.
Quarter (about 125-150 pounds take-home meat): 5 cubic feet
Half (about 250-300 pounds take-home meat): 10 cubic feet
Whole (about 500-600 pounds take-home meat): 20 cubic feet

  • CAN I CUSTOMIZE MY BEEF ORDER?

Quarter and ⅛ portion beef are boxed according to a standard cut list. That’s because you’re sharing the animal with several other people, and we equally divide all parts of the animal so that everyone gets cuts of beef from the front and back of the beef.
If you order a half or whole beef, however, our craft butcher will work with you to customize the cut list as you’d like it, and we’ll help walk you through this process.

  • CAN I SHARE A BEEF WITH SOMEONE ELSE?

Absolutely! We have an entire “Beef Buddies” program to help you round up your friends and family to split a whole beef! It's so easy! And program coordinators get all kinds of goodies - like free beef and discounts - email moc.mraftnetnocsfforg%40yelrA for more information!
